The Spook House
Upon Penguin’s imminent book launch of a new set of books labeled ‘Modern Gothic’, you are required to produce a book cover in only black and one red Pantone (predestinated). Convey the story. Fresh design, not clichéd. Using original typography.
Front: The Spook House is a story with mystic happenings around a barn that burnt down. With this in mind I wanted to represent the heat of the fire and the decay of burning timbers however my exploration into photographing fire led me to the image of a burnt match. The smoke emitted from a struck match holds a ghostly presence and fills the page beautifully.
Back: Disjointed layout of the copy mimics the smoke effect of the front cover whilst also representing the erratic terror that is portrayed in the story.
